Description
In the 1960s, polished brass became a staple in modern interiors. Lines became more graphic, volumes more compact, and the utilitarian object approached decorative sculpture. This Italian brass ashtray, in the style of Jean Després, perfectly illustrates this aesthetic. Its circular design is structured by three wide, balanced notches. The rim, highlighted by a twisted motif in relief, adds a subtle vibrancy to the smooth, glossy surface of the center. The contrast between the mirror polish and the peripheral texture recalls the hammered, structured work so characteristic of French modernism, while maintaining an Italian restraint.
The condition is very good. The brass has a light and even patina, with some micro-marks of use consistent with the period, which enhance its authenticity without detracting from its shine. It measures 13 cm wide by 2.5 cm high, a compact and balanced format. Perfect on a coffee table, a desk or integrated into a modernist set, it also functions as a sculptural catchall, bringing an elegant and assertive 60’s touch.
