This piece is part of the RELIEFS collection, a series of ceramic bas-reliefs. With this collection, Franck Scala invites us on a journey, reinterpreting the reliefs of some of the world’s most iconic natural landscapes. Fascinated by the impact of time and the elements on matter—particularly the effects of erosion on rock—the artist pays tribute to these natural phenomena by representing them graphically. For the composition of the RELIEFS wall sculptures, the artist delved into his many travel memories. This particular piece draws inspiration from Hawaii, where he was deeply moved by the archipelago’s volcanic activity. The lava is represented here with a deep black chamotte stoneware, fired at high temperatures, evoking the vast lava fields that left a lasting impression on him. Memories sculpted by the artist.
