This piece is part of the RELIEFS collection by sculptor & designer Franck Scala, a series of ceramic bas-reliefs. With this work, the artist invites us on a journey, reinterpreting the reliefs of some of the world’s most iconic natural landscapes. Fascinated by the impact of time and the elements on matter—particularly the erosion of rock—he pays tribute to these phenomena by representing them graphically.

For the composition of the RELIEFS wall sculptures, the artist delved into his many travel memories. To create Coulée de Lave, Franck Scala revisited his experiences, this time in Hawaii, where he was deeply moved by the volcanic activity of the archipelago.

The lava here is represented by a deep black chamotte stoneware, fired at high temperatures, recalling the vast lava fields that left a lasting impression on the artist.
